The Annual Venice Garden Tour
(310) 821-1857 In its twelfth year, this tour attracts more than 2,000 people annually to peep at the areas most coveted gardens. Venice is a hotbed for high-profile landscape designers like Jay Griffith (whose client list includes Brad Pitt), one of the founders of the tour.
The canals
Enter at Washington Blvd. It's called Venice for a reason: In 1905, Abbot Kinney created 16 miles of canals inspired by those in Italy. Most were paved over in the late '20s, but six remain. Lately, a renaissance has turned the little waterways, connected by wooden bridges, into a showcase for restored Craftsman bungalows and cutting-edge homes.
Venice Beach
Weight lifters, tattoo parlors, surfers, skaters and cyclists share this wide strip of Ocean Walk, where the air is filled with the delicious smells of fried dough and Coppertone. It's a tad seedy but a truly authentic Venice experience, and thanks to local environmental groups, the water is cleaner than ever.
