- Bakery Bar
- 1028 SE Water Ave.
(503) 546-8110 Weary of a career in social work, Jocelyn Barda teamed up with her husband to open a spot offering two of her favorite things: baked goods and alcohol. The resulting modern bakery/café is a hit, especially with the local design crowd. Come in early for local Stumptown coffee and the most delicious hot chocolate, or at lunch for organic salads or a smoked turkey-cheddar-arugula sandwich spread with homemade tomato jam. Save room for dessert—the five-spice carrot cake is to die for. You can also score great new items like tea sets, colorful ceramic mugs and incense.
- Doug Fir Lounge
- 830 E. Burnside St.
(503) 231-9663 A bar/music venue and the de facto restaurant for The Jupiter Hotel (see "Stay"), this is the epicenter of Portland indie-rock hipsterdom. Log walls and dangling mirrored globe lights bestow a Paul-Bunyan-meets- The-Jetsons vibe. The kitchen (open until 3 A.M.) serves up a mean breakfast, and downstairs you can catch such alterna-greats as Arab Strap and TV on the Radio.
- Gotham Bldg Tavern
- 2240 N. Interstate Ave.
(503) 235-2294 A fresh, hot Gotham doughnut smothered with homemade marmalade is one of life's great experiences—don't miss it. The newest venture from Portland It-restaurateur couple Naomi and Michael Hebberoy, this eatery offers down-home comfort food prepared with meticulous attention to the integrity of the ingredients and presentation (an egg sandwich has never looked so good). Three huge wooden sculptural walls by local artist James Harrison divide the stunning space.
- Portland City Grill
- 111 SW Fifth Ave.
30th fl.
(503) 450-0030 "Go to the Portland City Grill at 4:30 P.M. sharp for the amazing view—you can see all of the bridges along the Willamette River—and get unreal appetizers like shrimp tempura or crab cakes with key-lime beurre blanc for less than four bucks." —Tacee Webb, indie retail entrepreneur
