(631) 324-1770 From Sag Harbor, we drove southeast and stayed at this East Hampton inn, a convenient location for getting around. The rooms are suitably decorated for autumn weekends: William Morris wallpapers, large feathery beds with crisp white Frette sheets and two rooms wit bedside fireplaces. Be clear about your arrival time, as there are no check-ins after midnight; if you plan on being later, let the staff know so they can accommodate you. Locals rave about the dining room, but it's a little polite for us—you know, couples sitting looking at one another. We prefer the downstairs tavern's low ceilings, pub-style bar and casual oysters-and-burgers menu.

(631) 725-3535 This legendary hotel dates from 1846 and is perfect in fall, especially the bar, which has a roaring fire. Even if you aren't staying over, this is a great spot for a late-afternoon or early-evening drink—there's a first-rate wine list (and a world-class restaurant, if you decide to stay for dinner).
