African Safari
An indulgent, guilt-free vacation doesn't have to be an oxymoron. Russell, a native of Kenya and founder of the green-resort company The Art of Ventures, proves it. His small luxury lodge supports the locals and protects wildlife at the same time. The eight-room Shompole, opened in 2000 on a Kenyan conservancy, has already yielded a 35 percent increase in game, thanks to a no-kill commitment by the Maasai, who partly own and run the place. Eventually the lodges, designed by Russell using indigenous materials and powered almost entirely with solar energy, will create "a new circuit" for travelers.
