How to Pot a Plant

Transfer nursery plants from plastic pots to decorative outdoor pots, where they'll last all summer. This step-by-step works for vegetable or flower seedlings.


What you'll need:
  • Tarp, newspaper or vinyl tablecloth
  • Pot(s) with drainage holes
  • Window screen
  • Wooden plant label or wooden spoon
  • Scissors
  • Watering can, filled
  • Potting mix (garden soil is too heavy for pots)

  • *If your potting mix doesn't include fertilizer and drought-proofing granules, you'll also need:
  • All-purpose fertilizer
  • Drought-proofing granules
