Outdoor plugs and sockets need to be grounded so that the electrical unit will cut off if there is a short circuit due to weather or moisture. This is done by using the familiar three-prong socket. It is easy to change a two-pronged socket to three prongs with these simple steps.

The Process:

  1. Buy a three-pronged grounded plug from any hardware store or home center.
  2. Unscrew the housing of the plug to expose the metal attachments for the wires.
  3. Take the cord of the indoor lamp to be rewired and cut the cord about ½ inch from the plug and discard the old two-pronged plug.
  4. Feed the wire through the plug housing of the new three-prong plug.
  5. Pull the two halves of the wire apart to about 2 inches. With a utility knife, cut off about 1-inch of the rubber or plastic insulation off each wire.
  6. Wrap each side of the wire around the small metal screws. The white and black wires should be attached to the right screws on the plug. The neutral side or white wire goes to the silver-looking screw. The black or hot wire goes to the brass looking screw. Be sure to wind the wire in the direction that you will tighten the screw.
  7. Tighten the screws to secure the wire in place.
  8. Pop the housing back on the newly wired plug and screw it together until tight.
