vital signs In a fresh poinsettia plant, the little buds in the center of flowers will be red- or green-tipped, and closed tightly. But if you spot loose pollen, the plant is past its prime.
hot flash All stems with a milky sap have to be seared when cut, or they won't last in a vase. After trimming poinsettias, heat the ends over a flame—you can see them seal up in a second or two.
