Have your cushions zippered rather than sewn shut—removable covers are easier to clean. Upholstery guru Matthew Haly says, "Make sure your upholsterer uses flow-through foam for the cushion inserts. It's a loose, Swiss-cheese-y material that allows the water to escape."
material awakening
Unlike the sticky plastics you might recall from the poolside chaises of yesteryear, the current crop of treated woven acrylics—all quick-drying, easy to clean and weather-resistant—feel like fabrics you might have inside your house. Pay more and you'll get a better weave and a softer texture.
can cushions stay out all year?
No matter how rugged the fabric is, the foam inserts are prone to buckling, so cushion will last longer if you take them inside when you're not using them.
care tips
The fabric itself is mold-resistant, but the dirt that sticks to it isn't, so be sure to hose down your upholstery once a month. After cleaning or rain, lean damp cushions against a wall, zipper side down, and they'll dry faster.
