The Sink
Okay, I'm getting the single Domsjo sink from Ikea. Now dealing with the cabinet issue. Just think how sad I am that I can't have the double one like Kate F does! Kate, where'd you get that cabinet?
Susan and I had this exchange. She said:
I'm thinking this...you have 43" for the sink. How about a 12" cabinet wtih roll out shelves and a 30" sink cabinet?
Was thinking of "different" like file cabinets with small drawers in one side of that spot, or a movable cart, this way you get ample storage space.
The 30" cabinet would be for the sink. The other smaller cabinet could be next to the wall or between the sink and the stove. The sink (usually around 24") could be positioned toward one side of the cabinet to give you more counter space, for example, if it's next to the wall.
I said:
Oh, duh, so I just need a minimum of 24 inches for my cabinet if I'm getting the Domsjo single sink. Now I get it. Do you think it's okay to mix IKEA sink and Home Depot cabinets? Do you think one's better than the other?
SUSAN'S SAGE ADVICE CONTINUED IF YOU FOLLOW THIS LINK.
She said:
No, you're right, you have to use the IKEA sink base for this sink. Unfortunately, they do not have 12" cabinets, which I'd love to use to get you more counter/storage. They start at 15" wide. So, the question is, how committed are you to the sink? Storage/countertop vs. the sink! But, remember, too, that was just a preliminary plan for cabinets, but, you can see my thinking was to give you some counter space and add some logic to it all.
See, you can have a "flow" to the kitchen, or you can have it choppy (which blends well with funky, artsy, sometimes retro, etc.) Depends on how much visual interruption (busyness/cluttered) you want in the space. Look at your kitchen now...do you care if it's choppy, or do you want to try to make it a bit more calm, still with lots of individual expression, but, so that the eye moves more easily/freely....flows. That's a critical question in a small kitchen. There is no right or wrong...but you must have that awareness first and foremost so you know what the goal is.

Dropped the ball and didn't respond.

FYI, IKEA not having 12" wide cabinets was the reason I ventured to Home Depot, sacrificing the sink as a driving force. Yes...that's always the question, what drives what?
HOWEVER, that said, you may be able to use a Home Depot wall cabinet (like a refrigerator cabinet that is already deep-24", same as a base cabinet) and use it as the lower section for this IKEA sink or use a vanity cabinet, if it's not too tall. Then, someone just has to prop it up above the floor on some sort of studded structure (easy) and sit the refrigerator cabinet on top of it and your sink on top of that.
The other driving force for me was that I didn't want to downsize the stove for you. Downsizing would allow a 15 or 18" IKEA cabinet to fit next to the sink cabinet. So, I assumed the stove would not be moving at all. Sometimes you just have to have the full size of something because you want it, end of story, and work around it.
I:
Still didn't deal.
To which, Susan, responded:
I'm sure this finds you busy! I, too, am going crazy, like, out of my mind crazy. Listen, I'm not sure where you're coming from, if you want this to be a fast thing to do the kitchen or want to explore all possibilities. But, what typically happens is my customers slow down when they see the possibilities, even if they are small details. They should all be carefully considered, so I don't know if you are stalled by that (which frequently happens) or if you just want it done fast and think I'm holding you up or you're just busy. :)
Point is, if you find yourself slowing it down a bit, it's what happens, it's typical, as it should be! Doing a kitchen is a big deal. I know this, I live this, so I'm here to go through the details/nuances with you or to go at whatever pace you want to go at. You need to feel good about every choice, and I will help you along in the process.
I just want to give my thoughts and you take what you want from them. I'm just not sure what path you want to take...fast, like "whatever", a bit slower to consider things or what. I'm here, use me, ask me questions, or be controlling, whine, whatever. That's what I do...adapt to my clients' needs, yet, with guidance. I don't "yes" my clients and I don't push. I'm telling you, once you get into the kitchen zone, it's like, "will I ever get out of here??"
So, whenever, no pressure at all, really, just giving you a few thoughts and a little support if it's needed! :)
Enjoy the day!!
Hey, come see me at ICFF...I'll be exhibiting in the Danish consulate area along with 5 Danes, all of whom are staying at my house! I'm importing this company: www.hansenliving.com. Did you know I was doing that?

I used the ikea cabinets for everything. The little cabinet on the side is a bookshelf from Ikea's kitchen area--it's the "Perfekt" end base unit:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10027320
It is 12" wide but obvs. doesn't work as well if it's against something--for us it was perfect because it gave us something to rest the sink on (You need something besides the sink cabinet, to hold the counter) without adding bulk in that door area. That it had a cutaway corner was gravy. I don't know if that helps at all!
Susan is SO smart - I hope you emailed her back!
These issues are so crucial to getting a space that works for you, rather than thinking, "oh, I wish I would've done this" - or " why didn't I think of that". Even though I love my kitchen, I have little glitches that expert advice would have smoothed out. The thing I am never sorry about - counter space!
By the way - do you cook? One of the reasons I made my kitchen so much bigger than it was is that I am obsessed with cooking and I am a compulsive dinner party thrower. I wanted people to be in the kitchen with me; helping, talking, drinking, drinking, drinking... I would have made different choices if I ordered out more than anything.
Tell us your kitchen dreams, Scrappy dear...
PERFECT last comment, perfect...tell us your kitchen dreams. Good one.
FYI Ikea does have a 12" base cabinet they just don't have one with drawers: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S89811770
As there never seems to be enough drawer space in the kitchen i put baskets on the shelves of my 12" cabinet so they can function as drawers
Yes, baskets are great, especially if they have hand cutouts in the front.
Don't forget to consider the size of the stove, if you want the full size or a smaller one, that will drive what comes next.
Ikea has a 12" base pull-out shelf model http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S19823489
