Whitewashing the Kitchen Floor: I Oughtta Be in Pickles
Yesterday I was talking to our resident builder/DIY-er, Chase Booth, trying to score some leftover Marmoleum tiles from the props closet--fat chance! He didn't have any free floor tiles for me--good thing bklyndame might--but he did have a lot of great advice.
Chase says what a lot of you have said:
1. If I have nice wooden floors, why cover them up
2. I could easily have the floors sanded professionally and refinish the floors myself (eek!)
3. I ought to pickle the floors, (which makes me want to say "I oughtta be in pickles").
We have pickling (aka whitewashing instructions) on the site. Think I could do that?
Do we even like that look?

Rather than sanding and refinishing (or pickling), you could just paint the floor. I love the look of a painted wood floor!

We love pickling.
I'm currently building a pickled buffet for my dining area -- if you're lazy you can use an out of the can stain.
And if I, the least likely DIYer in the world can refinish their floors, you can too.
You should convince your friends that it's really a privilege to be allowed to whitewash a floor, and then they'll whitewash the floor for you. Or does that only work with fences?
I think pets can be really hard on pickled floors. A friend of mine tried them and had to re-sand the pickled finish back down to the original color.
Oh priscilla2, thank you so much for that comment. My pets are hard on the linoleum, so I imagine they'd be awful on whitewash.
We do not care for pickling. Get someone to sand it and stain yourself.
