Is Beauty Truth & Truth Beauty?

Courtney over at Style Court posted a while back about the importance of interior design--how good design brings people joy, etc. Which is indeed true. But on my cynical days all I can do is interrogate the idea of beauty and good design. I like to say it's all subjective. But look at me calling my friend's couch the ugliest one I've ever seen. And look at this gorgeous bed with a tree mural headboard in a Japanese pole house Kenneth Brown designed for a client's grandmother. [Via Style Court.]

I think good design that the person for whom it is done likes, is soothing, fun, and enhances other areas of a person's life. There is a lot of room for subjectivity, but it's sort of like a clean home: a joy to come home to and makes the more difficult things in life a bit easier. I thought this was your room - it is very, very soothing and lovely.

I love this room too! Would that my windows were really floor to ceiling!

My mom thought this was my room too. Alas, I an't that fast.

Do work. This is getting fairly ridiculous. Less talk, more action.

Love this! Hope I was clear that I don't rank design up there on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs :) Just think it's cool when anyone who spends most of her time in one or two rooms has lovely surroundings.

Thanks for noticing the post!

hey all- I have no idea how to keep track of a blog but here goes.... what is up with ugly couch opinions? I got an awesome couch-sent a picture- and my best friend wrote back 'that couch is UGLY'- that was the end of that subject....but sheesh. I'd like to see what is considered ugly... mine has 3 back cushions and 2 seat cushions....it seems to be a symmetry-makes-me- nasty issue.... LOL
