Do You Like Older Men?

The_old_man_cactus_2

Cacti are controversial. Most people would NEVER plant cactus. Cactus belong to hot dessert gardens covered with glittery white rocks and obsessive /compulsive plant collectors who sell tiny high-priced specimens at weekend flea markets. I have a garden that is primarily planted with succulents, but planting a cactus in it has always been a line I wouldn't think of crossing.

Until now.

Cacti have been looking really fresh to me lately - I've been putting more of the long, thin columnar types in the gardens I've been working on. I have two Cleistocactus strausii in pots in my back garden ... but I'm thinking about putting some in my front garden, for the whole world to see. Am I ready to go on record as a cactus lover? Hmmmmmm...

I do adore the cactus known as 'Old Man Cactus', Cephalocereus senilis. Just look how great they look all lined up in a row at the cactus nursery. Check out that white hair, flowing in the breeze. Now that's a foxy old man...

I'm so confused! To cactus or not to cactus...

Input, please!

Hot.

So that's one vote for tall, lanky Old Men Cactus in my garden...

I think...

is it possible to plant saguaros here? i just got back from southern arizona and those guys are the coolest. they do grow super slowly though.

Is it wrong that when you mentioned the photo reminded you of little old men that my mind went to straight into the gutter? Like my frightening little mental images, cacti are simply plants I don't like to touch, but I can understand the aesthetic appeal.

Chanchow - At California Cactus Center on Rosemead Blvd, the place where I get most of my succulents, they have three huge, incredibly beautiful Saguaro ... I would plant those here in a second if I could afford one!

Wickedgardener - tee-hee-hee... my mind is in the gutter more often than not!
Today I bought 3 little 'Old Men' - and you're right... they are kind of icky! But I'm attracted to them nonetheless - what does THAT say?
I'm still not touching them (shudder)

Containers, babe. Stick them in terra cotta pots and just plop 'em in the yard someplace. (All three in one pot, even. They can hang out together and play dominos.)

Then if you get bored with them you can move them elsewhere.
