It's Gonna Be a Long, Hot Summer

Okay, here we go again. Fires, Fires everywhere. This time it isn't just us - right now there are fires on both coasts. Florida fire representatives say this worst they've ever seen. Does anyone even question Global Climate Change anymore? It makes me so angry that the same old blowhards are still saying it is all a liberal fairytale. Last summer it got up to 117 degrees here in the San Fernando Valley! Los Angeles has always been famously mild - now, June-October are barely tolerable.
The fire in Los Angeles this last week was really close to me - Griffith Park is like our version of Central Park - it is a large park in the Hollywood Hills, about 3 minutes from Eagle Rock. The L.A. Zoo is in Griffith Park, as is the Griffith Observatory (I grabbed this awesome picture of it from Google - I couldn't take a good picture of the fire because the smoke came right at us), lots of stables that board horses, and wonderful hiking trails that wind through the hills. The fire is contained now, but some beautiful gardens in the trails, where you could stop and rest in the shade during your hike, are done for. The poor deer and racoons and other wildlife have been displaced from their homes, and are roaming around the nearby neighborhoods, drinking out of swimming pools and eating garbage.
The worse part - the fire was started by a smoker carelessly tossing away his butt.
Heavy sigh.

Gah, so scary. Did this impede your Horror Movie party plans? How were the corndogs and triple-pork burgers? I'm jealous that you 1) have a garden and 2) are gutsy enough to fry. I have taken the plunge yet!
kate, I hope you can have a garden. Yesterday I planted my veggie garden - 3 tomato plants in pots. Oh, and one in the ground that will surely die or be eaten by a gopher or rabbit.
Do you have a sunny window? A car (sunny back window - maybe that would work...)?
Ivette, I just showed my husband your Griffith Park photo and he was stunned. Used to push his bike up to the observatory and coast down the hill.
Hi Katef - yes, unfortunately the party had to be postponed ... my husband forgot that the new semester started today and he had to spend the entire weekend working on his syllabi (syllibuses?) and lesson plans. But I'm itchin' to make those burgers for a crowd! And as for frying - well, I'm a Texan, we deep fry steak!
Just you wait - I know you'll have a garden... a balcony garden is a good way to practice!
Sumcool - isn't that image scary? LA is so apocalyptic. You kind of have to get used to that aspect of the city if you're going to live here w/o going crazy. Or maybe you have to be crazy to live here!
I decided I'm going to take advantage of some of the holes in my garden left by the freeze and pop in some vegetables this year. I don't know what they'll do in my lean soil, but it'll be an experiment! I started with tomatoes, of course - 'consuelto genovese' is going to use my Aloe marlothii as a tomato cage, and I'm thinking of using the empty canes at the bottom of my Eden climbing rose as a support for 'green grape'... see, I'm a plant combiner, I just can't stop...
The destruction that mindless person caused to Griffith Park with his careless cigarette butt makes me so angry....GRRR...somebody should carelessly toss him- out a window! (Uh, did I say that out loud?)
My sentiments EXACTLY, Jules!
