Simpler Kitchen

I am really not into kitchens unnecessarily taking up space and budget that could be put to better use. This picture shows my kind of kitchen; the curtain is a pretty and cheaper option to having cupboards made and a shelf above is too, instead of cupboards. I can't believe how out of hand the cost of built in kitchens get, not to mention the visual weight and impersonality of it. Shelves of china & glass and lamps are so pretty and soften a space as do whacking great chandeliers--don't you love that?
NB. My sad sieve brain can't recall where I clipped this image from. If anyone knows the book and or the designer I would love to know so that I can go back to the book and also give it a full credit.

I do love a big chandelier, yes! And a discreet kitchen, if it is in a multiple use space, is always great. But for those of us who love to cook and guests that love to get into the act, I would worry about the pretty curtains getting mucked up in no time. Especially when they are pooled on the floor. Very pretty, but perhaps impractical.
The thing about kitchens is they have to be about function. When I see curtains, I see a free entryway for mice, and when I see open shelves, I see more time that I have to spend dusting. No and no.
This is so simple, elegant, functional and beautiful! Just about the most gorgeous kitchen I've ever seen!
French country kitchens often have curtains like this and you know how those French love to cook! When i put open shelves in my own kitchen my mother was all about the grease on the china. if the shelves are stacked with the things you use regularly the grease from cooking (even though we are surely all about grilling) doesn't get much chance to stick. Personally i just hate a built in kitchen, but i hate mice more, and actually its the cockroaches that really scare me.
Zgallerie has a really cute black chandelier called the Callais Chandelier that would go great in any kitchen. It is made of black tinted glass...Murano-esque.

This kitchen is perfect. I would never spend money on cabinetry. I prefer curtains and open shelves and organized mish mash. Good thing that's what I have and what I can afford:)
Hi Rita.. love this blog! I'm so going to do that curtain thing, great idea, especially love the neutral tone. Was at Petersham nurseries the other day, love it, food amazing, hate the fact that candles are about £500 each... (I might be exaggerating!) xxxxx
kathleen, Hi! i know what you mean about the candles, but don't you find that those are always the shops one likes the best!!! grrrrrrr. xx
oh that kitchen! So very lovely and chic. And romantic......perfect for making meals for two:)
