FLOR Tiles
Any strong feelings on FLOR tiles? I've waffled on these before, specifically to Becky "Bina" P : "Ooooh don't use them. They're corny." Her: "You said the checkerboard was a great idea!" Oops. I did love them in Julianne Moore's stylist's kitchen (sweet job much??) and I think it's the solid color factor. Crosshatching stripes like these just look wrong:
Yet the solid texture "Coir" tiles are fab:
Like in Hinson & Company showroom at the D&D. So why are they among the most expensive ($24.99 per tile or $9.29 per square foot)? The cheap ones are called "Working Class" -- I'm deeply offended -- and have this heathered look:
Great for a playroom but I still prefer the natural fibers for anywhere else.

nick,
not a huge fan. something is really odd about the seams- they compete with the patterns in my mind. AND as you mentioned they are pricey. when you figure the cost- they are much more than a basic seagrass rug or even a bound piece of carpet. I guess for playrooms they work... but overall, I say- just buy a rug.

couldn't have said it better myself!
I have say they are fabulous in an office environment, or a basement and this is why: you can replace a damaged or wet tile easy peasy instead of trashing the whole carpet. During a rain storm, we had a leak in my daughter's sun room. The tile came right up, dryed and we were able to put right back down.
Love 'em! I have had "Morning Coffee" in my living & dining room for 3 years and they have not shown any wear. Even with a cat who likes to pick. Not a fan of the stripes or floral patterns though.
I like the plain ones- like the natural fiber style that you show in the kitchen above. But definitely reject the stripes and crazy patterns.
In the catalogs, I always think that they show too many pictures of livingroom scenes with flor tiles, which just makes you think that a rug would be better.
Massive and merciless advert campaign (not to mention partnerships with Lazor's flatpak) does NOT equal a great looking product.
LOVE them! What is the best part? Got a stain or overall dirt, carry the tile outside or to the sink, soap it up, rinse with hose, let dry in sun, perfect again.
I have them in my office at my boutique. They are DEFINITELY not for high traffic areas. And I certainly didn't consider my small office as "high traffic," but perhaps FLOR would? They don't stick and there are already lots of stains (after 1 1/2 years). LOVE the concept and I'm sure they work perfectly fine in different areas, but not for my needs.
the offensive "working class" tiles also feel like brillo pads boiled, pounded flat, and stitched together!
I was thinking of using them for my home office, but after getting the samples, I backed WAY off. Like an earlier commentor said, good concept, but the execution just doesn't work.
hello DH... I was hoping you could use your deal hunting powers to track down a selection of fabulous throw pillows and blankets to bring color into a room. It is definitely time to upgrade my current selection.
and about FLOR tiles: if you aren't learning how to count or use scissors, colored or patterned FLOR is never okay.
I do like the sisal-ish tiles above, however.
I have always loved the "idea" of FLOR tiles, yet I never tried them until now. A local high-end Modern Contemporary store had an amazing warehouse clearance sale, I bought 8 tiles for my little breakfast area for $1.00 each! So far I like them and they are teenager friendly!
I love these rugs! Putting them together is a snich. I found them for super cheap at Overstock.com. They were $15.00 below Target.com's price!! Hopefully Overstock gets a wider variety of these rugs from FLOR becuase I will snatch them up like hotcakes!
I LOVED the idea of FLOR tiles and their affordable price so bought Thick and Thin tiles under my dining room table thinking I could easily clean spills my baby makes.
Although it?s durable, it's also a dust magnet and I have to pull out my Miele vacuum w/ special attachment to clean it (thank god I have a Miele though, because people complained their Kenmores just won?t do the job). And we don?t even wear shoes in the house. I?m planning on replacing it with something else in a few months because I can?t afford to clean it 3-4 times a week.
BUT, after a few disappointments with wool rugs, I just covered my bedroom w/ Toy Poodle. I didn?t want the rug under the bed, so created a U around it. And so far I?m loving it!
It has a smoother texture and doesn?t grab lint like Thick and Thin does. My baby even loves lying around on it and I would say it?s definitely more preferable than a hairy wool rug.
I strongly suggest ordering sample swatches first.
Ordering samples is key or seeing the tiles in person is must. Some styles do have that office carpet feel.I love my FLOR. I have Twill Ride and Checkered Past in my living room and they clean, look and feel perfect after more than 9 months.
