Dempsey Chair

Last weekend I strolled through the CB2 store in Soho (which a kind reader informed me is NOT the first) and gave this Dempsey chair a closer look:

Clean, modern, sorta boring.  But now from the side:

Dempsey's a manorexic! I bet he lives in Brooklyn and only works at CB2 to afford a studio space. Hot. But like many a hipster his clothes are dingy and boooooring ... this chair begs to be reupholstered in a wide stripe or big Marimekko print, or polished leather like his rich cousin RL-CF1:

$599 versus $16,500, sheesh.

They're both sort of ripoffs of the Mies van der Rohe Brno chair:

I can see it, bppi, though i think i prefer the CB2? it might be a while before i revisit tubular steel ... and i don't really know why!

Nick - your hipster comment had me laughing out loud. That particular chair does look manorexic.

As for the chair itself - - I thought you might have a soft spot for tubular steel.

I love the look. It makes me think of a reckless coke'd up hook-up in LA with some shady producer (let's cast icky/yummy Jeremy Piven in this terrible furniture fantasy). Tubular steel just makes me think of sex. I think that's a good thing.

Jeremy told me that he would never show anyone that movie, with the fifth-rate Mies knockoffs and the industrial-carpet burns.

The Brno chair with flat steel, rather than tubular:

I think even more a rip off of this chair! I don't necessarily see the Mies connection though.

Both chairs are from Ralph Lauren, so not sure if you can apply the word "ripoff."

I really like the shape. I'm a huge fan of tubular steel (shiny!), but this is a nice change from lots of other chairs out there. I would manage to impale myself on it, though.

I'll be honest that I don't care enough about design-- I think that paying $16K is closer to a car, not a chair. I get all excited, but when it comes time to pull out the plastic, the "knock-off" usually wins.

P.S. Re: CB2 in Chicago, I'm a teacher and sometimes I can't turn the correcting people thing off. I've heard there's a program I can join...

KatieKat74, we all need a teacher every now and then! Like the time I mispronounced "Sao Schlumberger" to my boss -- the horror. Thanks for keeping me on my toes.
Decorno, the Piven scenario has made me rethink tubular steel. Or how about an American Gigolo-style den of sin and degradation -- Richard Gere in gravity boots, anyone?!

Nick, i always love your posts. It doesn't really matter what they're about, you never fail to make me smile.
