Big Sur Style
Since reading Simon Doonan compare la couture to hippies in Big Sur making tooled leather belts I've been stuck on this idea, but I'm not sure it qualifies as a trend. Points to any reader who can produce an image of Kate Moss in the recent French Vogue wearing all kinds of leather jackets and cutoffs in a mangrove ... similar feeling but is it 'Big Sur'? Crate & Barrel has offered this table for years, and these tooled leather journals sold out on Etsy in a matter of weeks:
But the makers are from Argentina. Hmm. See other items here. In any case this is my style inspiration for Summer '08: biker gangs clashing with hippie craftspeople on rock jetties in northern California. I'm off to burn my name into this belt I just bought from J. Crew!

You're having a hippie moment aren't you?
These notebooks are very "Phoenix Shop" at Big Sur's Nepenthe... (http://www.nepenthebigsur.com/phoenix/index-p.htm) I would argue that the journals are more Big Sur-y than Crate and Barrel's eponymous table.
(P.S.: Nepenthe is the best place in the world por vida.)
P.S.S.: Want to be too (Big Sur) legit to quit? Order a pair of custom-made leather sandals from Senor "Hyde" next to the Big Sur bakery. No website. No quick turnaround. Just awesome, lifelong friends for your feet.
Such leather products are also made by craftsmen in India - from Rajasthan and Bengal :)

I am TOTALLY having a hippie moment! Thanks for all the great recs -- these sandals sound like they're gonna replace my hemp Rainbows ... but no online store? I'm Googling for a pic.
P.S. Just read some misinformed French blurb on the "Summer of Love" exhibit that said 'boho' means 'a bohemian who lives in SoHo' -- I think that's me!!
