IKEA Spectacular
Late post because I spent most of the day at IKEA!! First trip to a real store in two years. I felt a certain frisson pulling up to that blue monolith in Paramus, picking up a catalog, and hearing "our meatballs are made with no preservatives" over and over on the PA. For me, while Target and Club Monaco feel like home, IKEA feels ... quite obviously like Sweden. Or that movie Toys with Robin Williams and Joan Cusack.
Anyway the merch is SO much better experienced in person. One thing I love and hate about IKEA is the variety of finishes: seems like no "white" is exactly the same shade, and the surface might feel like cheap laminate or expensive lacquer. And I won't even start in on that basic metal finish which I call s--tanium. Best to go look and touch for yourself. The star of today's visit (which I'd definitely never seen online) was this bed:
Made of solid pine and stained yellow (mustard will make a major comeback, mark my words) this bed has potential out the wing-wong. You could paint it any color and box out the headboard and siderails in a contrasting stripe. And could you not make an easy canopy by tacking a patterned fabric tight to the top?? You totally could. Price is 279 meatballs.

Your blog is the highlight of my day. So funny, like walking through Ikea with my best friend. You deserve a 1000 meatball raise.
Keep it going!!!!!
When I was flipping through the Ikea catalog, I thought that this bed looked familiar. I was right, it was featured in Blueprint Magazine's latest issue. http://www.marthastewart.com/portal/site/mslo/menuitem.3a0656639de62ad593598e10d373a0a0/?vgnextoid=9c91b0a6e9074110VgnVCM1000003d370a0aRCRD&vgnextfmt=default
Ahh, "Blueprint" magazine: The Stepford "Domino."
LOL! The Stepford Domino--it totally is. Seriously though, I heart that yellow bed, but I heard some folks at Apartment Therapy say it was really wobbly--must be those skinny legs.
My nephew has broken not just one but two Ikea beds now. And I don't think he is a violent sleeper, particularly...
dejong, that is very sweet. are you sure you're not my best friend in disguise?? and the B-word must never printed on this blog again, you hear me people??? kidding. i love that room on their site. re: rickety beds, for $279 i'd feel okay investing in some wood glue and extra brackets ;-)
As soon as I opened the Ikea catalog this bed jumped out at me. Though I was rather dissapointed when I saw it at the store because the color isn't as bright in real life.
OOH! I saw this bed in IKEA too, and fell in love (the ashlee simpson "l-o l-o l-o l-o v-e!" kind of love...)theres another yellow canopy thats bright and shiny, that was also delicious :)
i loved this bed in the catalog, although i haven't seen it in person. i think it'd be right at home in my high ceilinged victorian apartment, all done up with west elm minimalism.
brackets and glue will make the connections sturdier, but how to make the legs themselves sturdier? run a metal angle down the insides and paint it out to match?
