Lars Bolander
I was short a few bits of furniture the other day--domino was shooting my apartment and I realized that I needed a coffee table pretty badly and a hall table - not so badly. So I ran down to Lars Bolander's store on Gansevoort Street. He has wonderful pieces and is a great stop for those things you need at the end of a job. Lars is not where you go for a bargain, but he has some lovely things and not all are very expensive. This bookcase for example is about $5,000, which for something of this size is not bad. It would cost about three times that to have it built, and it's a good investment piece, becuase it will work in so many spaces. In one house it might be great in a kitchen, and then if one moves it could work in a library/sitting room or bedroom. And it's important when buying furniture to consider how easily it will move around.

Hi Rita, this is a great find! I recently got some book shelves and media furniture made for my home (in India!), and how I wish I had seen this design earlier!

This is gorgeous, absolutely, and the color is wonderful too. I must, however, take issue at the "three times the price" comment. Ouch! Having this custom made, with many more options in size and color, very well may cost right around the same amount. Consider using custom cabinetry, through a designer of cabinetry, it is not always as expensive as one thinks, especially for something like this. :-)

interesting that you should say that, and i can see you are a kitchen designer, i would love to know your contacts as i have never found a way to custom make this for $5,000.
