Boston

Boston_garden

I have just gotten back from Boston where I was shooting a shopping story for Domino that will come out in November.  I was amazed by how like London the more residential areas of the city are. There is so much red brick, as well as tons of terraced houses. It's sort of a combination of the West Village, Brooklyn and the more Victorian areas of London combined.  One of the things I loved most were the gardens you see here. In England they are called Allotements--I have never seen them in the States before. Of course, it was raining when I took this shot, which made the whole atmosphere all the more English!

I love Boston, it reminds me of London a bit too, the gardens are great. I wrote a post on potager gardens not too long ago. In SF we can get plots in neighborhood parks to garden in, the wait is a little long but worth it. I can see coit tower from mine... amazing!

Aw, I wish I'd known you were here--I'd have loved to take you for an out-of-this-world ice cream cone at Christina's in Inman Square. (Ginger-Molasses! Burnt Sugar!)

I just moved to Cambridge and can't get over the Victorian houses in my neighborhood. People used to be so whimsical; all the houses have random extra rooms tacked on, or little half-moons of stained glass in the middle of a wall, or flowers made of different colors of slate in the roof. Delightful.

You took that photo in the South End, no?

I think i passed christina's, there were a a lot of places in Boston for ice cream, i spent quite a challenging afternoon in cambridge, in the pouring rain! i almost blogged that i was going before hand to see if anyone had any good ideas, i wish i had. i am definately going to before the next shopping story trip.

Did you make it to the Cambridge Antique Market over by the Lechmere stop on the green line? It's 5 stories tall and pretty cheap. Lots of junk but also some pretty great stuff; I got a nice silhouette there a couple weeks ago and there are cases of killer jewelry--costume and real--by the checkout counter near the door. Down in the basement is this sort of Lost City of furniture, most of it incredibly cheap. Again, you have to root through a lot of rubbish, but there's some good stuff and the prices are amazing.

I have lived in Inman Sq for 6 yrs now and part of the reason I love it so much is because it reminds me of my time living in London! I am so glad you had the chance to experience Boston/Cambridge and look forward to the article.
Next time we need to have a Domino Mag. reader gathering.....dinner in the outdoor patio of Oleana? Talk about an oasis, its heavenly!

I'm so glad you got to visit Boston! I lived in Beacon Hill for five years and it always reminded me of London. But then again, the settlers did come from London so what would you expect. You'll have to warn us the next time you go so we can suggest all our favorite hidden places and local haunts. I really miss living there sometimes. >

That is a beautiful shot, Rita!
The community gardening movement has been going strong here in the 'States' for quite some time, but with the current focus on the quality of food, I think more people are turning into part-time farmers. Many neighborhoods in cities all over the country have spaces where people who live in apartments can grow things - and these community gardens are always magial places.

Oh, i am so excited by the response this post got, i am really sorry that i didn't mention i was going to boston before i left - i so meant to and would have had such a more interesting time if i had. i can't believe how people appear from different cities on the internet, it is very exciting to think that we all chat here and are all over the country. i am going to chicago next, so if there is anyone is chicago with some good ideas let me know. will put some more boston posts up. xx

You are right! My in-laws live on Cape Cod and I've spent much time in Boston. I've never made the comparison, but they are very similar! Two great parts of the world!

Ronda, did you get my email? sounds like it. it is so strange i always get a message from the mail failure people when i email you, let me know if there is anything else that you need.

Where will you be in Chicago? If you want, I will try to give you some ideas. I grew up there and love it. I cannot wait until your posts about Chicago. Have a great time.

Hi Rita,
Strange! Yes I got it. Thank you. Did you get my response? It's alltbest@yahoo.com

yes, i think we are up to date, am going to check out your blog now. x

late to this party, but as a cambridge native and a current chicago resident (been here almost ten years) please do give a heads up when you are coming...! there's lots of lovely stuff to see, eat, buy...

I know this is way late, but I just started college here in Boston and was wondering if you could post some of the things you saw in Boston because I missed the November issue.
Thanks
E
