Please Ponder the Capiz
Anybody have strong opinions on capiz shell sconces/chandeliers? Are these beyond trend status now? I still love 'em. Starting with Verner Panton in the 1950s:
Fast forward to West Elm, 2000s:
I have to say I prefer the white but I still think this version is a little expected. Years ago I bought a two-tier Capiz Shandy (with brass accents) on eBay and spent three hours on the ladder with Amy hanging it. Well worth it! Check out this site Seacrest Trading Company:
For $98 I see this in a hall, vestibule, breakfast room or even a nursery. The details are more refined but don't scream "RETRO." Capiz?

The Verner Panton piece is gorgeous. while I love west elm, their version looks like it belongs in some sad outdated beach cottage.
I agree they've reached "classic" status and won't ever need to go away, though some versions are lovelier than others...
I'm definitely a fan. I once saw (maybe in Domino) a before and after of a dining area with really high ceilings (I'm talking 14ft). It was stark and cold before they added a huge capiz chandelier (it must have been 6 feet tall). I loved the effect. I really like the idea of using a smaller scale version in a hall.
To me, the west elm version is pure simplistic beauty so it can easily become a classic where as the other two are so ornate that they may be a bit limiting in a space, even dictatorial about what else would work well with either of them.
The capiz lighting from West Elm is very simple; however if you need one for a dining room, Pier 1 Imports has a rectangle shaped white capiz chandelier. The shape and size is great as a focal point in a room.

This is totally off the subject (though I may do something like this in my studio. There's only one overhead light, and just replacing it would make the room feel a lot more polished, let alone turning it on!), but I need your help! I have posted something on the forums, but I can't find the wood cutout table here:

It's slide #10. I have been looking everywhere, but no one seems to know who makes it. I figured you HAD to know. Would you help?
I still love them, too! I bought the West Elm one and I bought a really beautiful capiz curtain. Can't wait to use them here in Marrakech!
bigtab, i love that circle-in-a-cube table -- to me it looks like aero studios, but that was a dead end. these lacquer cubes are the same design but without the pretty woodgrain: http://www.kimberlyhallkids.com/
how skilled are you at faux bois??
Im so happy you guys here loove capiz.. because i come from southeast asia (thus the nick name) and its really nice to know that western people can also appreciate capiz and like mother of pearls that's local in our continent and precious in its own truest form.
