Under the Big Top

Take a look at this blog The Peak of Chic. I love love love it and NOT just because the author has featured yours truly more than once.  It's a really good resource!  I'm so inspired by all those Billy Baldwin rooms.

Anyhoo, today it piqued my interest (groan) because I want to encourage you all to try making your own tented room.  Bring the outdoors in.  Just look at this amazing Slim Aarons pic:

I wanted a poolside awning in my apartment (really inspired by Kelly Wearstler's at the Avalon Hotel -- can't find an image to save my life) but you don't have to take it quite as far with sewing and trimming to get the same effect.  In small, squarish (guest?) bedroom, I suggest you tack/glue inexpensive fabric around the ceiling line, trimming around doors and windows -- and gather it a bit at the corners to resemble side curtains.  Then tack a few widths of fabric at the same line on all four walls, gather and staple at the center of the ceiling (around a ceiling fixture?) to make a canopy.  To hide the messy gathers I suggest buying some synthetic felt in a darker color (I'm picturing kelly green over sea foam gauze) and cut out a notched pattern -- felt doesn't fray -- and glue where the "canopy" begins.  Does that make any kind of sense?
