Is the Flokati Over?

I've been thinking about rug trends lately.  There are trends in rugs, right?  You know it's not like the cotton dhurrie was invented ten years ago but they've certainly become more popular.  Seeing a lot of Morroccans lately, too, and points to anyone who can find a good pic online to illustrate those! They're all over your dogeared copy of the mag. And patchwork pony fur/cowhide carpets.  I love all these and think they'll stick around but I'm not sure I can say the same for their fluffy cousin, the Flokati.

Flokati

Cost Plus World Market tells me "the Flokati area rug has been a Greek tradition since the 5th century."  Whoa.  Still, in the 21st century they feel a little played out if you don't live in a fishing village (which doesn't sound half bad right now).  Maybe because of the 90s mod revival, Austin Powers, shag carpets and all that. I think success always lies in the execution: don't do the expected rectangular or hide-shaped Flokati in front of your living room sofa.  Why not buy a few of these ($150 each for a 5x7) and install them wall-to-wall in your bedroom?  So soft underfoot and great for noise control.

Please don't tell me it's over (though I used it in the expected, regtangle-by-the-sofa way)! I just purchased one from Ikea (4'x6') that I've layered over a Crate and Barrel Jute Rug (6'x9'). I'm loving the juxtaposition of the textures and the look together is casual, airy and organic. Plus, at Ikea's price, it's not a major investment to replace if my two dogs - who haven't quite learned not to eat my decor - get a little hungry. The only downside - the rug is relatively new, so it's shedding as much as my dog's do!

they freak me out a little bit the shaggy rugs, i can never help worrying about what might be living in there. And then as they get old the wool gets a bit matted, gives me the shivers a bit. love the idea of them all over the floor layered wall to wall though. do you think they could be sheared?!

StacyinTX, don't listen to me, I'm just being my usual overdramatic self! I love flokati over jute, all about a play on texture. But Rita I worry about the crumb factor too. Does "How many roasted almonds shake out of the Flokati?" sound like a fun game at parties?

I am also scared of colonies living in flotakis. But I just got back from Argentina and I was so tempted by all the cheapo cowskin rugs. The new ones are just ok, I say, but I was in an antique store and they'd thrown down one that was so old it was almost paper-thin, and super soft--made me want to buy a new one and use the hell out of it for 25 years so it would get to that worn out stage.

Love the Flokati rugs, but people are hardly using rugs even in NYC anymore, floors ,all floors, tiled and wood, with a tiny area rug under coffee table..........
I still love to decoate with rugs, brings everything together and doesn't look like empty room, and cold....

I think the flokati is hot, as is any twisted rug. There are all kinds of really great wall to wall carpets that have twisted pile, so they shag. But not as much as a flokati. Some are nylons even. Kids love them, they are very cleanable, and fun.

I like taking some wall to wall binding it and making an area rug. It's an affordable alternative to something hand knotted.

Can the rugs be professionally dyed? I'd love to have a blood-red one.

If you want to hang 2 large 6x10 ft shag rugs and they weight about 25 pounds each -- what is the best way to hang it.

The conventional rug hanging style involves handsewing a piece of velcro to the rug and mounting that to a piece of wood attached to the wall were the studs lie.

But if the rug is 25 pounds, will velcro work? Perhaps double or triple strips?

Ideas?
