Another week, another post on lighting. This time I'll admit that attractive fixtures aren't always an option, and sometimes all you have to work with is the BULB. But bare sockets don't have to mean bare bulbs. Before I moved into my apartment two sisters managed to live here under one fluorescent orb for more than a year. Did they perform open-heart sugery in their spare time? I don't know. But if all you have is a socket, you still have options. My favorite is this gigunda half-chromed bulb:
I first noticed these in a diner in Brooklyn (where most trends begin ... for better or worse) and they did a great job of lighting the space without blinding the hipsters. They're nice on a ceiling mount in a hallway or on a wall socket. The convex mirror part is fun at eye level to help you keep an eye on potential shoplifters and tipsy party guests. This 6-inch diameter version is six bucks a pop, so I'd buy a few and experiment. Would look great in a Warhol Factory-inspired room:
